電動汽車所使用的馬達以永磁馬達為主，有別於小時候模型車的概念，大型馬達的線圈是在Case上，而非在轉軸上的。 電動車馬達的效率除了本身的設計外，馬達驅動器是關鍵技術之一，相同的馬達使用不同的驅動器所產生的效率不同。 驅動器主要的功能是產生多個輸出端的電壓差，每個輸出端之間是有規則的互動，也就是我們稱的相位，一般以三相馬達為主。
